Dell R730xd Server set up raid drives from iDrac8

Posted on Thursday, October 22, 2026

I have a dell R730xd server with an iDrac8 with a PERC H730P mini Raid Controller with 2GB of cache.

 I have 4x  3.5" 4 TiB drives and 2x 2.5" 1TiB Drives.

My plan is to set up a raid 1 for the 2x 2.5" drives and a raid 6 for the 4x 3.5" drives.

Convert the drives to Raid

After logging into the iDrac8 web page open up Overview à Storage à Physical Disk

Here you can see they are all set to "Non-Raid"

Set Raid Controller to RAID from HBA

Go to Overview à Storage à Controllers  then click on Setup.

Change the HBA to RAID

Set to At Next Reboot

Click Apply

Click Create Job.

Click Job Queue.

Now reboot the server.

Then double check it

Looks good.

Get the disks Ready

Click on Setup

Select Convert to RAID in the Assign to All section.

Click OK

Click Apply.

Go to the Job Queue.

Watch its status.  (click refresh button in upper right)

Once it reaches 100% go to the next step.

Now they are all set to Ready.

Create Virtual Drive

Go to Overview à Storage à Virtual Drives
Click Create

Give it a name OS-RAID-1
set layout to RAID-1 and Media Type to HDD.

Choose the Disks to add to the Virtual Drive.

Select At Next Reboot then click Create Virtual Disk.

Click OK

Restart the server to get this change applied.

After the reboot I can see those drives are marked as online

And I can see the OS-RAID-1 has been made.

Now to make the raid 6.

Go to Overview à Storage à Virtual Drives
Click Create

Give it a name DATA-RAID-6
set layout to RAID-6 and Media Type to HDD.

Choose the Disks to add to the Virtual Drive.

Select "At Next Reboot" and click Create Virtual Disk.

Click OK.

And reboot the machine

After a reboot

I can see they are all online

I can now see that I have both virtual disks.

Installing from an ISO from the vFlash

I have Ubuntu 26.04 already uploaded to the vFlash (see https://www.whiteboardcoder.com/2026/09/uploading-iso-over-2gb-to-idrac8.html )

Now I want to install Ubuntu 26.04 from the vFlash onto the Raid 0 I made.

Go to Overview à Server à vFlash

From the vFlash tool.  Select manage then checkbox attached for the ISO you want to install and click Apply.

Now Launch the Virtual Console

From the Virtual Console click on Launch Virtual Console

Now power cycle the box.

Watch it reboot in the virtual console.

Press F10 to set it into Lifecycle Controller

Click on System Setup

Click on Advanced Hardware Configuration

Click on System BIOS

Click on Boot Settings.

Click on UEFI Boot Settings

Click on UEFI Boot Sequence

Select the vFlash Media you want in my case UBU26 then click the + button till its at the top.

Click OK

Click Exit

Click Yes

Click OK

Click Finish.

Click Yes.

Now it reboots.

Now install Ubuntu!

Make sure to install on the correct disk.

Mounting the second drive

After logging into Ubuntu run the following command.

  > lsblk -o NAME,SIZE,TYPE,FSTYPE,LABEL,MOUNTPOINT,MODEL,SERIAL

I can see the new second Raid-6 Drive is at sdb

Let’s confirm it with the perccli tool

First install the tools (if you do not have them)

  > cd /tmp
  > wget --user-agent="Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/128.0.0.0 Safari/537.36" \
  -O PERCCLI_7.3208.0_Linux_A01.tar.gz \
"https://dl.dell.com/FOLDER13074167M/1/PERCCLI_7.3208.0_Linux_A01.tar.gz"
  > tar xzvf PERCCLI_7.3208.0_Linux_A01.tar.gz
  > sudo dpkg -i "$(find . -iname 'perccli*.deb' -print -quit)"

Create a symlink to make your life easier.

  > sudo ln -fs /opt/MegaRAID/perccli/perccli64 /usr/local/bin/perccli

Now run.

  > sudo /opt/MegaRAID/perccli/perccli64 /c0/vall show all

Now let’s partition it and format it

  > sudo parted /dev/sdb --script mklabel gpt
  > sudo parted /dev/sdb --script mkpart primary 0% 100%
  > sudo parted /dev/sdb --script set 1 lvm on
  > sudo partprobe /dev/sdb

  > sudo pvcreate /dev/sdb1
  > sudo vgcreate vg_second /dev/sdb1
  > sudo lvcreate -l 100%FREE -n lv_data vg_second

  > sudo mkfs.ext4 -L Second_raid6 /dev/vg_second/lv_data
  > sudo mkdir -p /mnt/second_raid6
  > sudo mount /dev/vg_second/lv_data /mnt/second_raid6

Now let’s see if its there.

  > df -h /mnt/second_raid6

But this won’t survive a reboot.  Let me add it to /etc/fstab

Get the UUID

  > sudo blkid /dev/vg_second/lv_data

In my case UUID="557d406e-d3bf-43c0-bb6c-a66f80365e76"

Now open /etc/fstab

  > sudo vi /etc/fstab

Now add this line at the end

  > sudo vi /etc/fstab

Add this (adjust for your UUID)

UUID=17e43fd1-d3f0-4e86-aa6c-8ea98a8cd880 mnt/second_raid5  ext4  defaults,nofail  0  2

Save it

To test it I am going to reboot and make sure it mounts.

  > sudo reboot now

Log back in and run

  > df -h /mnt/second_raid6

Looks good!
